Cracked frame around steering box?
I've done a few searches but may have used the wrong terms since I didn't find the answers I was looking for.
My problem? I have an '88 F-150 4x4 longbed XLT Lariat that just failed my NC inspection today. I was told there was a crack in the frame by my steering box and that the body would have to be removed so they could get to the frame to fix it. My BS meter went off so told them just stop and I'd pick it up. I recently paid $800 to have a rebuilt transfer case put in so don't really want to keep throwing money at the truck considering how little it is used but have enough tied into it that I don't just want to scrap it.
I talked to a buddy of mine who owns a Chev and he told me this was a known issue with older Fords and should only require removing the inner part of the fender (rather than the whole front end) and could be welded without too much work.
Too bad he lives 70 miles away or I'd just drive it over and let him do it. Then again, that may be my best option...hoping I don't get pulled for an expired tag.
I don't have a welder and really need to get it inspected so I can get my tags renewed. I don't have pics of the crack but can certainly post some Friday after the shop shows it to me. Without the pic, I'm just throwing this out as a "what if" kind of question to all of you gurus who know these trucks like the back of your hand.
Is this a "known" issue and can it be repaired for a reasonable cost?
Thanks!
