Hello everyone, and happy holidays. Is there anyone out there running a Gear Vendors overdrive unit? I have an 06 PSD CC with the automatic transmission, and I am planning a few long hauls this summer. Some of these trips I will be towing a 20' enclosed car trailer. I want to see if anyone has had any success using it and if it would be worthwhile for me to pull it out of my hot rod and buy the right adapter to put it in my truck. I also would like to know from the tech guys that are lurking about out there, what problems or negative effects this may cause. The reseach I have done says that it will increase mileage and nothing is mentioned about negative effects, but as we all know there is rarely a free lunch, and you cant believe advertising because its just meant to sell the product. It works just fine to tame the 4:56 gears in my hot rod, but will it be alright for my truck?
You wont need it... the 5r100 is perfect for this... It is designed to pull. The cost involved in getting the adapter and the drive lines shortened and lengthened would FAR out weigh the cost savings in fuel...

Yeah, I have one, too. But I suspect you are correct on the cost of the adapter. I really think he could split the gears usefully, just like the big rigs do. I don't believe he can save enough to recoup the costs of the mods, as you say.
There are no negative effects, but there are some caveats you need to pay attention to. Like never engine brake with the GV engaged.
The only differance I see is your a V 10 and OB is a 6.0 Diesel... His TQ is much lower and a bit higher. It will pull the load like nothing is there.
If your looking for a bit more MPG get a SCT Xcal2 and get a econ program writin for it.
Call Tadd at www.elite-diesel.com He can hook you up with a good tune that will improve MPG and give you a bit more HP, or you can go wild with it too!!!
I went out on a limb to buy this truck, so I really dont want to void the warranty with aftermarket tuners (yet). I talked with my local dealer and he said that the gear vendors unit will not void the warranty because it is offered through some sort of upfitter program that Ford is associated with. I know there are quite a few tuner threads on here, but my question is are they detectable if I need dealer service? I was told that they leave a "footprint" behind even when they are uninstalled.
Call the Gear Vendor folks. I don't have their phone number but it is on their web site. A real person answers the phone and will direct you to one of their engineers. I did that and he talked me out of buying one. He said the 5R100 transmission doesn't need one for pulling power and you'd never get a return on your investment if you were looking for mileage.
Yes they can tell when you tamper with the computers programmed parameters. Think of it like this... you know how they have those strips of tape on boxes that say "Do not open if seal is broken"? It's kinda like that.. once you modify the original coding once, a flash "sequence" is stored in the computers memory and is kept with date and time. Each sequence is recorded I believe up to 25 times and then it does not record any more data. Some dealerships care, some don't. IMO, diesels are dominant enough as is... why risk losing your warranty for a few extra ponies and a few more ft.-lbs. of torque?? Just stick with what you have and in case something does break you won't have to foot the $5800 repair bill for the engine yourself.
Thanks for the replies. After looking around and doing some more homework , I think that I will stay with what I have, as far as not putting the Gear Vendors unit in. I didnt even think about the cost factor versus the amount of fuel I would actually save.
I think that I would be better off looking for my mileage and power in other ways that wouldnt wipe out my warranty, or my wallet. Maybe a good exhaust system and an air intake. Its the direction I was going to go in anyway even if I put in the Gear Vendors.

The folks at Gear Vendors are real people and won't try to sell you something you don't really need. I spent two hours at their shop yesterday having my unit tweaked to remove a minor vibration. They love to chat tech with you.
I learned from Jordan (their chief tech) that they do very few Ford pick up installations. Vast amount of work is motorhomes with the V10.
They never charged me a dime and the vibes were gone.
I had one on my V10 Exc 3.73's with the 4r100. It worked well to fill the gap between 3rd (direct) and O.D. Also filled the BIG gap between 2nd and 3rd. Running double O.D. when not towing worked well also. The best setup with the V10 GV would have been with the 4.30 gears. This might have even allowed for a little double O.D. with towing with little or no wind, or at your back.
The problem with using it on the 5 speed is that the Torqueshift doesn't allowing locking out O.D. to be able to use direct (4th)/over. With a heavy load or towing uphill or against a stiff wind, this would be useful.
