I'd like to know how to install an intercooler on our trucks. It must go in front of the radiator, in front of the AC coil? How will it mount? Is the piping difficult to route as far as clearance goes?
Also, as far as intercoolers go, I've heard of guys using the 6.0L intercooler. Is there going to be horsepower restrictions being the IC has plastic end tanks instead of metal ones? I've heard the plastic can blow out under high horsepower. Are there any cheaper IC kits available than the Banks?
For our trucks you can get either a 7.3 or 6.0 IC I am going with the 7.3. THe 6.0 is about 30% larger and therefore probably harder to fit. The 7.3 fit relatively easily. The biggest hurdle is the intake y-pipe. Piping and y-pipe is avaible from banks and a few others but they range from 300 to 500 depending on where and what you get.
Check my Gallery. Their is a couple pics of my 6oh IC installed. Not to bad of a job just time consuming. As far as plastic vs. metal....I dont think unless you push 40+ psi boost ya got anything to worry about with the platic ends. The piping isn't too difficult. I went with a kit from GTS Motorsports and it installed pretty easy. But he is real hard to get a hold of as of late.
I agree with itfox, the plastic ends should be just fine. my dad has a 6.0 and it will pust 35 lbs completley, and I do mean completley stock. and I wouldnt think many of us would have to worry about pushing any more than thay very much if atall
I used the page that TJ posted for help when I did mine. If you look in my gallery I have pics of my install. It wasn't all that hard, but it took me almost 4 days. But I wasn't on it all day everyday.
