FMX trans shifter

FMX trans shifter
Hi folks, I'm new to the site and have lots of questions and maybe a few answers.
I'm building a '58 F-100 with/for my son, it will be his first personal ride. The trucks got a 351M and FMX auto from a '76 mustang (supposedly). My question concerns the FMX trans, the previous owner used a universal floor shifter with out neutral safety and park detent, dangerous. I salvaged a B&M mega shifter and called B&M for advice on using it, they said it will not work. I know Lokar sells an FMX shifter for about $200. Their must be another way, less expensive, to make this work. Any one have any ideas? Any one know have doner 58's they are parting out?
Thanks!

FMX trans shifter
LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-01 AT 10:12 PM (EST)[p]First off, I can say the engine and trans definitely did not come out of a 76 mustang. A larger car would have had this combo. As far as a shifter, you will have to put your fabrication skills to the test. I have a B&M shifter on a c4 and all it has for a neutral safety is a pushbutton switch that the shifter handle bumps into when in park. (It is a large switch though, to handle the current of the starter solenoid). Can you mount the switch off your B&M shifter onto the other shifter?

FMX trans shifter
Thanks for the reply.
the shifter that came with the truck is a hurst "one size fits all" and the one I salvaged is a B&M mega shifter from a TH350. Neither has a neutral safety switch. I though about using a microswitch to ground the coil of a 15 amp relay in park but don't want to confuse my son should he need to work on this. He lives in Duluth, MN and I'm near Tombstone, AZ.
The FMX is on the floor now, when I go through the shifting pattern, using the trans shift lever, one extreme end of the pattern has a detent to hold the lever in place, the other does not, is this the park position or the 1st gear position?
Thanks!
Steve

I bought a Hurst shifter thinking that I had a c4 tranny but discovered it was a FMX called Hurst for advice on installation they informed me that they had nothing for a FMX and folks tried modification of the Hurst Pro-matic shifter and all had problems.
I am now looking for a different Floor mount shifter for my 1967 F100. Any ideals

There are a couple of things you could do to rig up a neutral safety switch. If all you want is for it not to start except in park, mount a limit switch [ MPJA - Power Supply, Power Supplies, Security Cameras, LCD, Fans, Etc. ] so that a part of the linkage trips it when the shifter is in park. Run the wire that goes from the start position of the ignition switch to the start relay through the limit switch. If you want to start in both neutral and park, get a neutral safety switch from a doner car (something with a floor shift automatic) and adapt it to your linkage.
