After this garage having my truck for a monthto long a buddy of mine told me that advanced auto parts will check my charging system for free.So seeing a mechanic didn't find it for some unknown reason I went to advanced auto and guess what the kid hooked there machine up and my problem was my alternator bad diodes so i bought a new alternator while I was there and problem fixed.Guess this mechanic just lost another customer I went back to his shop and asked him why he couldnt find the problem since he had it a month he didnt even answer me go figure.Im my own mechanic now.
Here's a link to his original post if you are interested in the history of his problem. I will warn you though, that most of the original replies are a debate about a testlight vs a DVMM for finding drains. It's personal preference really.
Mechanic probably should have found that, but a couple of cautions
- Check your battery -- Bad battery ( or even just one that's severely
discharged) can take out your nice new alternator
- Alternator may not be the only problem. Keep your eyes open for
excessive charging when you startup -- could be
- a higher than normal drain when its parked -- can cause your
alternator to fail again if it has to keep working too hard
- some accessory drawing excess juice -- this would be a lot harder
to spot. Again could cause an overworked alternator.
