Tried a Gibson catback (3" single) on my 97 F 150 (4.6L) a few years ago, and was a little disappointed. Minimal sound difference from stock, and no longer enough room to stow the spare tire under the bed. Eventually removed the muffler, and just ran the straight 3" pipe from the cats...sounded sweet.
With the 03 Ranger (4.0L), I plan to try a single (2.5") with a flowmaster delta 40.
I have the gibson dual sport, I did away with the spare tire issue, by having my system fabed to exit in front of the rear passenger tire, also maje it a little louder, but not to loud. This is my 2nd gibson, I really like the quality.
I had a Flowmaster 40 series. With tips out the back of the bumper it was noticable, especially on hard acceleration, and had a nice sounding idle. Just barely hear it idling inside when it was in front of the house.
With just the muffler and turndowns immediately after, it got quite a bit louder.
It has no muffler now, sounds pretty good for a six, it's DEFINETLY a six when you rev it up though.
Either tonight or tommorow it'll be getting a new muffler, depending on when my Christmas laziness goes away.
