I have been looking everywhere for a speedo gear for my 78 ford 203 t-case. Does anyone know if the np205 gear will fit? I can find them online. Should I get the 6 or 7 tooth one? I found a 203 gear (yellow) from a dodge but I couldn't get my speedo cable to go in. I am guessing that the diameter is wrong or perhaps it runs a completely different speedo cable, so I guess dodge gears are out. At any rate, any help with this would be great. Please don't tell me to go to my local tranny shop - they don't have a clue, and don't stock any parts this old. Thanks in advance.
i just got the newest jeffs bronco graveyard catalog and they have the gears for 80-96 so check out their site. they may have what you need. the book has a formula to tell you what speedo gear to buy based on your original and what tires and gear ratio you run. they have two phone #s 248-437-5060 and 248-486-1760 just in case you can't find it on their site
Have you tried your local Ford Dealer? If they don't stock it...maybe they can order it...or at least give you the correct part number...then you can call around.

I have tried ford. But the the book that NYE Ford has in Wasilla goes back to only 1981. Also, I don't have my old driven gear (the one on the t-case) anymore. About a year ago I took it to a local shop to get the speedometer repaired and they apparently took my original drive gear out and didn't put it back in for some odd reason. They have since gone out of business. So, I found a yellow one (5 tooth dodge?) from the bone yard and hoped it would work, but it doesn't. It seems to be too big for the cable and driven gear to go in. JBG has lots of stuff and I will call them Tuesday in reference to this, but they don't appear to have drive gears - just driven. It could be that they are just not posting them online. At any rate, I am at a loss of what to do with this turkey. I have been told that np 205s share the same drive gear. Does anyone know this to be true? Thanks again.
For one thing, Wasila Ford Dealer is FOS...that 1981 CD parts list starts well before 1980!
These parts guys today give us old retired parts guys a bad name. Bottom Line....he's too friggen lazy or doesn't care or both....to look up the parts!
And that ain't nothing new!
Try another dealer. You will need:
Transfer case tag number...or if the parts guy is good, he can look it up by application.
I will have books next week...so if you haven't found one yet, at least I can give you the correct P/N.
Sorry for the rant...I've heard these stories for years..and they still tick me off today.

Thanks, NumberDummy. The parts man actually tried pretty hard. He even got the book out for me and we both looked through it and the book that he has for reference really only does go back to 1981. He did think that the 7 tooth (white) gear could work (and the do exist in the lower 48) but we both agreed that it would stink to pay for shipping all the way to Wasilla AK and have it not work. He had no idea if it would work and he asked their service department and they had no clue either. There just aren't many of these pickups left up here (you can count them on one hand) so they don't have much experience with them anymore. It would interesting to see what the rebuilders are using for this gear. And I tried contacting rebuilders up here too, they haven't seen a 203 in a long time and don't stock anything for them anymore. I will try Cal Worthington Ford in Anchorage after the Christmas Holiday and with any luck the big city dealer will have more answers than the little guys here in Wasilla.
OK...I didn't realize your were in AK...or I wouldn't of typed 'see another dealer.' If the guy looked in an actual book...that would be 1980-86. Good luck when you "Go see Cal."
Cal got his start here selling Hudson's in the 1950's. I worked for him at his Long Beach store.
I'll check on the gear myself next week when my books arrive, and let you know.
Go see another dealer is always good advice and not completely unrealistic in Wasilla because Anchorage is only about 60 miles away. I am going to have to call Cal's Tuesday. I'm not holding my breath. Aren't those "Go see Cal" commercials annoying? At any rate my rig is a 78 f-250 4x4 with a 203. Once again I appreciate your help.
I am still looking for a ford np203 t-case speedometer drive gear. Does anyone know if the np 205 speedo drive gears will work? I have heard that they will work from possibly unreliable sources. Also, does anyone know if they came with a 5, 6, or 7 tooth count? I have been to all the local tranny shops and drivetrain shops and they have not been able to help me at all. Thanks in advance for your help.
For some help, since I still don't have the resources...call Green Sales in Cincinnati, Ohio. They will be happy to assist you. 1-513-731-3304. In addition to P/N help, they have a huge inventory of NOS parts.
Green Sales is staffed with former Ford partsmen (Number Dummies).
Don't forget to ask if there is a clip to retain the gear!!

They use the same gear for both, but neither one only has 5 or so teeth. It's more like 16-21 or so teeth.
Go to www.broncograveyard.com and they sell them to match the size tires and gears you have.
Edit: Notice your talking about the drive gear. They should be the same, but I don't think BGY sells them.
The drive gear is the one on the main shaft. The driven gear is the one that you are thinking of and it is on the end of the cable. Driven gears I can find- drive gears no luck yet.
Thanks. At PATC Tranmissions (online) they have both the black 6 tooth drive gear for a 205 and a white 7 tooth drive gear for the 205. Does it make any difference? They will both work right? I know I will need to change to driven gear to make the speedo accurate.
I am sure I will forget to look at the shop today but I have both set ups at the shop. The bronco with the 203 still has the speed-o cable in it. I am also pretty sure that most if not all cable ends gears are the same.
