New thread...'old' problem.

Repeating sporadic problem: After driving some time (30-40 mins normally or tonight..2hrs) on the highway with no problems, I sometimes idle down the exit ramp to find my 6.0L chugging, stumbling. The only thing I feel I can do to keep it from wanting to stall out is pop in in neutral and run the RPMs up.

Unless it's in a 'stall safe' spot, I don't let it all play out. Dealer has looked at it after an 'event' and it has thrown no codes or dealer cannot duplicate.

I can't go a fill up without an event on this thing...

Merry Christmas eve, eve. Happy holidays everyone!

EDIT: ULSD confirmed last 2 fill-ups. Powerservice white bottle every fill-up.

I'll have to double check, but I'm pretty sure it was a 1st half '04 vehicle build. Something like March-May timeframe. I'd have to check the engine build date.
No real noticeable smoke. The only smoke I ever see is at night when I jump on it and the car lights from behind illuminate it...if that makes any sense.
Thanks!

Really sounds like an EGR sticking or sluggish. Have you had the latest update done? It's a great help in diagnosing problems with the EGR and Turbo.

EGR/EGR cooler was just replaced under 3K miles ago. Manifold cleaned due to wet 'sutty' deposits. This is first EGR since we bought in July, but second EGR in ~20k miles according to service records and OASIS.

If the latest update includes injector cycling, yes.

Thank you for the reply.

I would have to say that you should let an event play out and try to get it in to the dealer soon after the event. Something like that should leave some kind of code stored. You also might want to ask them to check that your VGT map has been learned. Good luck with it!

I did let a couple events play out.

One was a minor stumbling in a parking lot. Never stalled, never quit stumbling until I shut it down.

Second event, drove to work (~40mins), event started in parking lot, let it run, called SD, and took it in. It literally did the worst of it at the stop light in front of the dealer.
I should have let it go, but I popped it in neutral and bumped the RPMs b/c I thought I was going to stall at the light. Wouldn't matter tho, diesel tech doesn't get in until 9am so they just wanted it shut down. By the time the tech looked at it, no duplication and no code.

Wow, those intermittents sure can be tough. Especially when they don't leave any footprints. Sounds like you're coming to my dealership with the diesel tech not showing up til 9. Anyways, things like that can be disheartening, but they eventually show something that points the tech in the right direction. Hopefully you aren't too angry to enjoy the truck anymore by the time it's fixed.

Yeah...with all the 'technology' you'd think something would be recorded, but I'm no expert.

I'm not angry really. Just disheartened and unconfident in my vehicle. It's not pleasurable thinking that I'll soon be loading the family into the vehicle to make +3hr one way trips for the holidays and wondering if we'll be able to keep a schedule based on the temperment of the 6.0.

Anymore, it's not a matter of 'if', it's a matter of 'when'.

I love this vehicle. It's everything we want it to be and more. IF I can get this stuff worked out we'll be rockin' and rollin'.

All I want for Christmas is my diesel tech to say "your CONFIRMED problem is (insert issue here) and it will be ready to pick up (whenever)!"

Thanks for the replies.

how bout that build date. just look and see if you have a icp sensor on your right valve cover next to the glow plug module.

Vehicle build 04/04. On the right valve cover there is a blue 2004 International sticker with a paint marker stripe on it ('containment' mark?).

If the icp sensor has a 3 wire connector forward of the oil fill tube but behind the glow plug control module, then yes...I have it.

My glowplug control module is mounted 90deg from the one in the pictures from this link... http://www.backglass.org/duncan/ps60...l/ps60_000.jpg

Thanks!

well that rules out that idea. on the 04s, we had some issues with the harnesses, and alot of issues with the hpop fitting. i wish i coul dhelp more but you are going to either way till it gets worse, or find a new patient dealer who will try to find your problem.

Thank you for your reply. I do have the luxury of 2 equal distance Ford dealers. I may call the 2nd one to ask about the experience level of their tech and make a decision from there.

Thanks you for your replies.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

Happy Holidays!

Drove to the Cleveland area after the holidays with no problem. Pulled into driveway from trip back and the issue started again. Let it play out for almost 10mins. Never stalled but never stopped stumbling. Shut it off. Restarted after about 1 minute and it ran smooth.

I got the sound on the video camera, although I don't know if it'll help the tech.
