Front End Klunk !

Here's a good one for you. Getting a 'klunk' from the front end. At first you would hear it once in a while, even once when someone was just getting in on the passenger side. Lately I hear it mainly when braking. Anyone experience this yet? Not wanting to front out a lot of money for the 'investigation'.

Also can't get the damn wheels off the truck. Seems the aluminum wheels and the steel hubs like each other. Would appreciate hearing how someone else has combatted this.

Thanks.

Sounds like a bad ball joint.

Big 10-4 on the ball joints - you will need to replace both sides at the same time. Have you had any problems with the front end shaking on braking?

My tire shop takes a rubber headed sledge hammer to the tires to break the bond between the aluminum rim and steel hub. Then they use LIBERAL amounts of anti seize compound on the threads and face upon reassembly. I've used a regular 8# sledge going around the outside of the tire - just don't hit the rim.

If I'm not mistaken at least the lowers are sealed and pressed in. Sounds like a trip to the shop for that without having the equipment. Requires an alignment once done as well, doesn't it?

Is it normal for them to be out at 40,000 miles? The only thing notable that I can think of is that we added a grill guard about 5,000 miles ago and have towed a camper (31' Airstream, 6000 lbs) for about 12,000 miles.

From: Raleigh, NC.
I lightly sanded with an orbital sander on the back side of the rims where they meet the hub to remove the rust and corrision, then I polished to a high gloss with the Power Ball.
Then I applied a thin layer of wheel bearing grease to the surface of both the wheel and the face of the hub.
No more problems since.
I also purchased a 600 ftlbs 1/2 Air Tool to remove the lugs and it does so with no effort!
Heavy duty trucks take heavier tools for sure.
Also had to buy a heavier torque wrench that would go up to 165 ftlbs. A lot of the tire stores don't seem to have one that high either which tells me that they don't know the proper torque settings for heavy duty trucks! I guess they don't care if the rotors warp....they make more money that way!

The only time I get the klunk is when it rains. Does it every now and then, then quits.

Read a lot of posts over time, and no one seems to have nailed the problem. Some have claimed it was the body mount bushings, others the sway bar, ball joints, etc.

Mine did it much worse when it was new..I bought it with 12K miles on it. Now with 60K and it only does it when it rains.
Go figure!

Doesn't seem to be a big problem.

One thing I have noticed is when I am under changing the oil, I have notices the rubber bushing seals on the factory front sway bar have ruptured.
Any one else had this problem? Are there after markets available? Prothane maybe?

Maybe the sway bar bushings are the cause of the klunk and now that mine are ruptured, they are more free and don't klunk as much?????I dunno!
