Well, it depends on the vehicles they came out of more than the axles themselves. Bolt patterns, overall width, center section offset (I think), spline count, gear ratio, carrier (open or limited slip) could all be different. Also a 9" could have disc brakes if it came out of a late 70's Lincoln Versailles.
I will guess you are talking about F150 rear end to F150 rear end. The 80's used a tapered roller bearing instead of a steel ball axle bearing. The Tapered rollers are a better setup and can haul more load.
I think all F150's used 31 spline axles...well at least all I have had dealings with. Most cars ran 28 spline.
well one is coming out of a 1978 ford f150, it has after market gears and a spool. the other one is coming out of a 1970 f100, with aftermarket limited slip, and gears.
and what im trying to find out is if i stripped both of the 3rd members down to bare bones would it jusst be a simple swap over or not. could i use the gears and spool out of the 78 9" in my 70 9" or would that not work. they both have the stock spline amount.
I'm not 100% sure I understand your question, so I'll cover both choices.
If you want the gears and spool out of the '78 put in the '70, then it's easy. You don't have to disassemble the third member, you just swap the whole third member.
If you want the gears out of the '78 and the limited slip out of the '70, then you have to set up the gears, which usually requires a pro to do it, unless you have all the tools and knowledge already.
anym, the first choice you covered was the answer that i was looking for.
one of my friends is selling his 9" rear which has 4:56 gears and a spool. and the buyer only needs the bare axle housing the bare thirdmember, and the axle shafts. so what was trying to find out was if i could swap my third member with my friends, that way i get the 4:56 gears and the spool, without having to pull them and then take them over to a professional gear person to set them up. and the buyer has agreed to do the swap of third memebers as long as mine will work with the later 9" axle housing.
i can then take the 4:10's and limited slip out of mine and sell them.
