I have a 1950 F-6 thats about 80 % ground up rebuilt. And I just let the idea of a parking brake,so far just fly by. Until recently. Originally I know the big trucks had the parking brake mounted on the rear of the trans. But what did you guys do if you did not use the original trans. I have a later model 4 speed granny trans. in it. That does not have brake unit mounted on it. A few days ago I though I had a good idea. Why not use something like a B&M line lock on it. So I went my local parts house and read the B&M catalog about the line lock. It said to be used for drag racing staging or holding on a hill. So I ordered one. But when I got it. The instructions said that it will only hold up to one minute or less. Gee I was mad. I call B&M at the parts store and the said that the brake lock could not be used, even though the catalog said it could. The claim any longer then a minute would burn up the solenoid. But still
I haven't given up on some type of hydraulic parking brake. Even a manual type should work,if its seals will hold up to brake fluid. A push/pull type valve simular to what big trucks use. But for hydraulic fluid brakes instead of air brakes. Any ideas ?
Many years ago, when I was in the Forest Service, out tankers used a hydraulic line-lock stle parking brake. The truck wheels were always chocked as a matter of standard procedure, but I was always fascinated by the e-brake setup. It was lever-actuated valve on the dashboard that locked up the brake hydraulic system. Except for the modern line locks being solenoid actuated, it was exactly the same idea.
You should be able to design your own. Maybe you could get lucky and find the valve in a junk yard.
What you are looking for is a MICO brake lock. I have these on all my
wreckers. If you can't find one you can use a hydraulic ball valve, available
at any hyd supply. I used a 1/4 npt high pressure ball valve on our dump tk
with good results. I hope this info helps.
