Hello. I have a 1992 Ford Explorer 4X4 5-Speed with 180k+ miles on it. Just the other day a changed the thermostat since it would almost always read cold and never get up to heat. The car had been running cold for atleast the past 5-6 years. I used to have some pining/detonation under WOT on a few odd days, but now it seems mroe prevalent. Pretty much anytime I got WOT between 2500rpm and 3500rpm I hear pinging. Beyond 3500rpm and below 2500rpm I seem okay. This problem was most likely brought to the surface since the engine is running hotter now causing detonation to come on easier.
Basically. How do I easily fix this other than bumping up to 89 octane. I like running 87. Is there a knock sensor that needs to be changed? Is there any sensor in general that might have failed causing it to not retard timing as I imagine it should when there is pinging? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Clean the MAF sensor. There's a ton of threads here telling you how to do it. Basically what happens is the sensor gets dirty and sends a false reading back to the computer. This false reading causes the computer to lean the mixture, and this causes the ping. I clean the MAF as part of an oil change on my 94.
Thanks for the tip. I tried searching but could not find anything comprehensive. Could you please link me to the instructions. From what I could gather it requires spraying CRC brake clean somewhere on the MAF. Where is the wire to be cleaned located. Thanks!
The wire filaments that need cleaning are inside the MAF. You have to take off the top part of the sensor to get at them (the part with the security torx screws. Security torx bits can be purchased inexpensively at any self-respecting auto parts store). I prefer to use isopropyl alcohol, but any solvent/cleaner that you can be sure won't leave any residue behind should work.
I've also had issues with the lower intake manifold bolts coming loose (which causes a small vacuum leak and thus the engine runs a little lean) causing ping. I would also suggest tightening those down to spec.

That was very helpful. I know I should get a Chiltons but, if you could please help me out, would you happent o know the approximate spec for the lower manifold bolts. Something in the 20 ft-lb range I would imagine?
I don't have immediate access to my manual. The vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com are an electronic version of Chiltons. That should have the spec.
And, if memory serves (an iffy gamble at best), I thought it was closer to 10 ft lbs.
I cleaned the MAF and that helped alot. The car runs almost perfectly now, but I still hear a little pining under WOT. Is there anyother sensor that needs to be cleaned or replaced? What can I do to fix this? Is my IAT reading a colder air than there really is? Is there any type of knock sensor to retard timing? Thanks!
Would changing the O2 sensors help? If so, where can they be had for cheap? must I replace all 3, or just the front 2 and not the cat 02 sensor?
