This forum needs a permanent glossary for those mechanicaly challenged Areostar owners.

What is an MAF?

What is a seafoam treatment?

What is the o2 sensor and how do you change it?

thanks for the info

The glossary would be nice. MAF Mass Air Flow, it is a sensor that tells your engine computer how much air is going in to the engine. The O2 sensor tells the computer how rich or lean your engine is running when it is warm. The O2 sensor has to be warm for it to work. If it is cool, it does not work, and the computer guesses how much fuel the engine needs based on the last time the engine was running. Seafoam treatment is a transmission fluid additive. If you are thinking your transmission needs it, you should of changed the transmissiom fluid, a few times, a few years ago.

Is there a Seafoam treatment for your transmission? I thought it was like an updated version of Marvel's Mystery oil, or Gumout. It is supposed to remove deposits in your fuel system.

O2 sensors determine rich/lean condition of your engine by sensing how much oxygen is present in the exhaust gasses. It's probably the most important part of most closed-loop feed back engine control system; the engine computer uses it to determine how much fuel to inject into the engine.

GLossary is a good idea, but I have the other idea - to collect links to Cars and Truck theory. Are you sure, that Eric knows what is the optimal fuel:air ration for the engine, and what the ignition timing chart is for? Sometimes it is difficult to tell what is going on to drivers, who drives 9-class trucks for many years.......
This forum is visited by different people from professionals to diletants. And sometimes it is difficult to discribe the problem, becouse more answers causes more quations.... Some of us are confused to ask "kid's quations"....

Thanks for your help guys, I am a history teacher. Not real good at mechanics I do love my old aerostar and towncar. Trying to get better at maintaining them so they will last. I posted a question on a Lincoln Towncar forum three weeks ago and still havent gotten a responce. Thanks again, you guys are very informative and helpful.

I also have never heard of changing transmission fluid? How often do you do that?
