I switched from Rotella 15W-40 dyno oil to Rotella 5W-40 synthetic.
I bought the truck used with 79K and switched at 100K
The normal mileage break in applies to new engines and usually expires after 20K miles, after that synthetic is allowed, if you so desire.
Here's my 0.02, if you have any kind of oil leak, it wil be multiplied with synthetic. If not, drive on. Good stuff if you can afford to play. Never have run it in my PSD, but have in my stang. Holds up real well.
I moved to synthetic at about 115K and haven't looked back. No oil leaks have shown up either, so I think I'm good there. I first did the switch for easier starting with the 5W-40 instead of 15W-40.
I'm switching to a synthetic 5W-40 at 118K, but I really don't know what I'm switching from since I've only had the truck for barely over three months.
On my E300 MB, there is an oil life meter. It checks the resistance of the oil and not just a calculation. Anyway, I noticed that it gave me more mileage when I switched to synthetic oil and less when I switched back. One time, it came to about 13000 plus miles before it told me to change the oil. So, while I say it can let you get more mileage out of your oil, if I were to do it, I would certainly run 2 oil changes thru it first and then get an oil analysis
I just switched a couple of weeks ago from Shell 15w-40 to the syn 5w-40 and what a difference starting when it is -30. Also, I have not noticed any leaks yet. By the way my truck has about 65K.
