Can some one please take a picture of how the alternator installs on a 1973 ford 460? I removed it some time ago and cannot figure it out for the life of me.
that last picture is just waht i was looking for. Thanks for all the responses. That leads me to my next question, how do you run the water pump without the power steering pump? the crank and the w.p. line up, but there isn't anything to take up the extra belt slack. could one maybe replace the alternator pulley with one that stands of a bit more and run a single belt around the alt-crank-water pump?
Mil1ionI like the thought of an idler-pully, just not sure where to begin as far as tracking one down, new is fine. Any idea of a part number that would work nicely without a termendous amount of fabricating?

Do you have any pictures? My alternator is in the low mount position, which uses the back (1of3) crank pulley by its self. From what I can tell the next crank groove lines up with the water pump, but then there isn't any adjustment. the front groove on the w.p. and the front groove on the crank do not match - they are off ever so slightly.
i used a short belt that go's straight up to the wpump with no idler. ill go see if theres still a number on it and let ya know later today.the only bad part about it is ya have to take of the wpump pully and put the belt around the crank and the pump pully them pull up on the pully pretty hard to get it over the pump shaft.i know some ones goin to say well how ya tighten it then its so tight when ya get it on there ya dont have to tighten it and in a couple years when and if ya do need to tighten it just go get another 10dollor belt
i cant remember how its looks of hand, but if the alt pulley needs to be further out to match up, then you can go buy a double groove pulley to put on it and leave the inside belt like it is and attach the outside belt to the wpump....i hope that made sense....
