I just bought a 2002 explorer and I didn't even think to check the 4wd when i test drove it. It has the push button 4wd and it wont engage in high or low. The light on the dash doesn't even come on when you push it. It doesnt seem to go into auto 4wd either. Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be.
I know the feeling. Was a first time to the 4x4, when I got my 02 with 89K. Did not even know how to put it in 4 wheel. When I needed it, was not working. As far as I know, 4x4 auto, is active all of the time. You need to be stopped, foot on brake, trans in (N), push 4x4 HI, then 4x4 Low, if you need to go that low. The reverse, to go back. What I have noticed, is when I start up, the dash light for the 4x4 hi, does not light. Checked the bulb, good, need to take to the shop to get it fixed. Good Luck with yours.
first you need to check for power at the electomagnetic clutch, with ignition in run position, put the switch in the 4h position and check for battery voltage on the brown wire that enters the T/C near the output shaft hump.
If there is no battery voltage on this wire you will need to check back to the fuse.

I'm willing to bet it's the 4x4 motor at the transfer case itself. The motor gets corroded and doesn't recognize what state it's in(2H, 4Hi or 4Lo) so it doesn't switch to anything....
Yes, probably so, but we need to start the diagnosis somewhere before we tear things apart.
The electromagnetic clutch should function regardless of the motor function, which only changes Hi to Low.
