i have a 56 f100. am thinking of making a overhead console
has anyone done this? did you make one yourself or find something
at the local yard to work? does anyone have pics?
thanks in advance
Well, I hung an old tape player off the roof rib on mine but it was a nosebleed getting it up there... wiring was easy once it was in. If you can find a console like LMC sells, you'll likely be better off.
Be cautious about placement, as well... I had a black and blue spot right between my eyes for a week after I had to throw on the binders suddenly on the road one night.
Rod doors makes a separate ABS console. First thing to do is to decide exactly what you want to use it for so you know what size and configuration to look for. When customizing vans was popular there were dozens of different ones to choose from, I don't know how many of those manufacturers are still in business but a google search for van acessories may turn up some choices. Pimp my ride often uses overhead consoles for drop down computer screens. It would not be difficult to make your own using a 1/4" plywood basic structure, shape it if you'd like by glueing styrofoam to the form and shaping it to your liking then covering it with one of the fabric and fiberglass resin kits they sell for making custom molded speaker boxes. You can get quite ceative with that stuff since the fabric stretches over most any shape and then becomes a hard shell when impregnated with the resin.
