I am getting ready to change all 4 shocks/struts on my wife's Mountaineer. It looks like I will order the Monroe's. Is this just a bolt on deal and will I need to align it afterwards? I looks like I will have to deal with the springs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I did the rear shocks on my wife's 99 on Saturday. Toughest part is the top of the driver's side shock. I dropped and removed the spare. I found it easiest to reach over the tire winch to undo the shock. Not much room, but I was able to use more of the ratchet swing than going in from the front. The right side is easy. I haven't tackled the front yet. Are you replacing the 5th shock (rear axle damper)? The Monroe part number is SC2958.
Neither the front or the back are very difficult. As Jim suggests, drop the spare for the rear for easier access. Also, a coulple day before you repeatedly start spray the mounting points with your favorite rust busting lubricant (I use PBlaster) to help loosen them up before you start. Air tools are helpful but not required.
thanks for the input jim and mason. I guess I should have known better than to ask a technical question about a girlie vehicle like the mountaineer and explorer. I will get the struts changed no problem. Thanks.
