How do you determine tire size replacements?

My 05 supercrew F150 is due for new tires. I have Goodyear Wranglers AT/S 275/65R/18 with stock aluminum 18" rims and no lift or leveling kit. I want to put the largest tire without putting out big bucks for a lift because after the warrenty runs out I will install a 6" lift. Plenty of time before then. Do I need to messure the center of the hub to the wheel well or something? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your input. The 305 or (12") is the width but do you think that I can go higher?

4DOORSR, First I want to say thanks for your reply. I went to the local tire shop and ask for that tire size (305/65/18) and his responce was that they (MAY) rub in the front during turns. With that being said, are there any modifications or cutting involved to get the full turning ratio? I believe you that they will fit and am willing to do mild adjustments but the shop said there is a 10% restock charge if they don't fit. He also mentioned that the tire size is odd and more expensive. It was also explained to me that the tire height was figured by 65% of the 305 mm or (12") width will be the height. Is this true. I appreciate your input.

There are other (narrower) tires that are just as tall as the 305/65r18. 305 is only width and means nothing as far as height. I did quite a bit of reseach into this, but my notes are eluding me right now. I will post them up after I find them.

I'll probably get hell for bumping something that's 6 months old, but oh well. I'm looking for info on tires and ran across this thread.

The guy at the tire shop was correct. Yeah, the 305 is the width, but they don't just make up that second number. That is in fact the height/width percentage. The height for that tire would be 65% of 305mm (7.8"). To get a slimmer tire that is the same height, that number would need to be higher (70 or 75). The "R" in the tire size of course stands for "radial".

Have you taken into account the dramatic power and mileage loss that is going to come into play, when you put as much tire in as will fit? Just asking.

bigger tires

can putting a bigger, more heavy tire on your truck mess with your suspension?

do you really see a mileage and power loss with bigger tires from stock?

Depends on how far you stray from stock. I upgraded my 275/70?R18 to 285/75R18sm, and didn't see any real difference. If you were to jump to a 33" or so from that size, you would definitely see a loss of perceived power, and mileage.
