Porting

I have read alot of guys say to port your heads on a 460 to get some bigger hp. I was curious, does anyone know if there is a guide of some sort out there to kind of help an amateur out with porting? Is there any stock heads you cannot do this too? Do you have to do any other mods like cam or intake to be able to do this? Any more info would be appreciated as i am really unfamiliar with doing head work, except taking them off and putting them back on.

Hi preppypyro,
I don't know of a 385 series had that won't benefit from a little work. You didn't say what year or what you were going to do with the motor so I can't give aney advise as to what cam, intake or other modes you might like or be helpful. True you don't have to do anything else to your motor and you will get some benefit from doing some head work.
I like the info on http://www.reincarnation-automotive.com/index.html
You have several options you can send a head and have Scott do one port and you can coppy it or sign up to use the teck pages

The engine I will eventually be doing this on, is a 460 from a 77 f150. As far as I know its all stock, and I have no idea what type of heads it has on it, or anything. I basically just got it, and took it to where Im storing it and left it there. But I know I have been reading alot of info from this forum, and I love how some guys are getting upwards of 400 hp and it doesnt sound like they do all that very much. If theres any other info I can give you, please let me know and I will get it for you!

head casting number should be d3ve-a2a, and yes scott j has good info on porting these heads. a bit of exhaust porting, some headers, a straight up timing chain from a 1968-71 460 or any good aftermarket chain set straight up or 2 degrees advanced... cam, intake, and carb all depend on application, and we would have to have the application before recommendations on those parts. what vehicle are you putting it in and what are you planning on doing with the vehicle

Well so far I am planning on putting it either back into the 2 wheel drive half ton, or possibly putting it in an older pre 50's stepside truck. Right now I am going to be building the engine for for having some power under the hood if I want to take off from someone So i guess speed would be more of a reason why I would be building it. This is my first big block motor I will be putting actualy time and money into, so I thought I would research it and see what I could come up with. So any advice, or whatever is appreciated.

well... you could do a stroker for big power... 520ci or 545ci... the kits run around 2000 dollars but you can piece one together for a bit less... the 545 im piecing together ill end up with about 1500 dollars into parts for the shortblock, then you can either reuse your stock heads with some porting or go aftermarket, im assuming youd be building for pump gas... if youre willing to go pump premium only you can set your compression higher than if you want to be able to run regular, or if you run a bigger cam you can run higher compression on the same octane gas... its all in the money youre willing to spend and what you want to do with it

Cool, I am definatly going to sink some coin into it so it will be able to move, and you are right about the pump gas. I wouldnt cry too much if I had to run premium either lol

So far it is going to be up to a c-6. But I am checking into a zf-5 manual, or possibly a e40d automatic. I will be beefing whatever I have up, as I am pretty sure a stock tranny wont be able to handle around 400 horse. I could be wrong though.

a c-6 stock can handle around 800 horse, so thats a good choice, same with the zf-5 speed, but the e40d would have to be built up pretty good to handle much over 350, and if you did decide to get that 545 stroker kit, you could easily have 500 horse or so and over 600 ft-lbs torque, but youll have to forget about getting any sort of fuel economy out of it with that much displacement

Yeah true enough about the fuel economy. Might as well jsut stick with the c-6 and put a little coin into it.
