OK I have around $3,500 for my project here. I have a 351m in my truck at the moment and it needs a rebuild. I want to get as much horsepower as i can, althought its not much money to work with. So i was wondering would it be better to rebuild the 351m and put some high performance parts on it or Buy a 460 and put some performance parts on it?
probably make the 351 a cammed 434 with aftermarket heads, intake and carb. thats probably the cheapest way to make close to 500 hp with your situation.
id put the 460 in... port the stock heads... bigger cam... weiand stealth intake... 600 cfm or 750 cfm edelbrock... nice dual exhaust with headers... what are you using the truck for? if its towing you dont need horsepower you need low end torque... if youre racing you need horsepower and not so much low end torque... if youre rebuilding the 460 id build a 521 or 545 stroker for a tow vehicle- stroker kit is about 1900 dollars but you can piece one together for a bit less... if youre looking for a race 460 then use the money for rpm parts like aftermarket cylinder heads and a big cam and valvetrane and leave the bottom end stock
Im not using it for towing its just the truck i drive everyday. It just doesnt run like i want it to. I just got this money as a gift and was going to use it to fix it up.
well if youre using it as a daily driver then just do a relatively stock 460 rebuild... .020 over pistons and rings, new bearings, do some porting on the stock heads with a die grinder... rv cam and lifters, rebuild the heads, stock or performer intake... 600 cfm edelbrock carb... nice headers... truck oil pan kit... and some new tires
Well as interesting as the 434 that JBradley mentioned about, the heads alone will run you close to $2000 and the stoker kit for a 335 series engine with balancing is going to run you another 1600 so that would eat up about all of your budget and leave nothing for intake, carb cam etc etc.
Darrin had it right for $3500 you can build a 460 fairly decently and be pushing the 500hp mark with the right parts atleast mid 400s mark. Port the heads even if home job work on the exhaust and bowl blending. add some 2.19/1.71 stainless valves, a good cam, the stealth intake, and a 650-750cfm carb (depends more on the cam) and good ignition and headers and your set to go. Oh and do a decent rebuild on the bottem end with forged pistons, upgrade the rod bolts, good oil pump and timing chain and a balance job.
i go with darrin and monsterbaby 460.dont know where your from but 3500 should build a very nice 460 did 1 for my daily driver f-100 for 2500 run on 87 and slip a little NOS on it and 93 and the truck went 12.4s on slicks an 3.50 gear an then back to 87 an drive everywhere
lol na just a 250 plate from NOS just a little mods. the fogger is on the wagon its suppost to be a 500 hp kit from NOS but on the big block only getting bout 300 so far it went 9.94 with same short block as truck motor.its just got a solid cam and dove heads ported on it with a portasonic 750 vac holley.just play things anymore
so if anyones wondering about a 460 or 351/400 i'd say 460
