Thanks, guys, for the advice. I went ahead and hauled the truck home until I could decide what to do. From what I hear on this message board, it seems like the best thing to do is to find another engine. The block is cracked. The mechanic said I could have it sleeved, but I really don't know what that is. I'll try to classifieds here and e-bay.

I really appreciate all the help, guys. You've been great.

That's why the rebuild was going to be so expensive. Sleeving a cylinder is alot of work and only worth it for an engine that can't be easily replaced. They hog out the cylinder and drive a sleeve (looks like a piece of pipe) down in the bore, and then bore and hone the sleeve for the new piston.

Guys, I have another question for you:

Do I have to put a 272/292/312 engine in my '55 F100, or can I use a modern engine with a little modification?

Thanks.

You can definitely go with a modern engine and trans with a little work and modification. There are all sorts of kits available to help with swaps like these, especially for the 53 to 56 models. I only wish there were more goodies available for what I have, 1960 F100

The 289-351 SBF series plus the FE 352 thru 428 all fit with kits available. Others prefer the 429/460 but its a tight fit for headers.

If you use a modern engine plan on swapping out the trans also. You can use an automatic or a standard shift trans. Trans cross members are available for both. Just don't expect your old trans to bolt up to a modern engine. This will also require modifying the drive shaft for length and the correct yoke to mate to the trans.
