Wiring harness...etc....

Where is the best place to purchase a new wiring harness for a 55 Ford P/U? When I bought the truck, it has wires all over the place with no good fuse link or box. CRAP!!!!!! Waiting for the fire to start when I drive down the street...HHHHEELLLPPPP!!!

Also, I used a painless performance harness for my '58 because I planned on a custom appearance, with modern accys. I got it from Summit Racing for a fraction of what the oem was gonna run me from SVF.

LAST EDITED ON 10-Oct-01 AT 01:52 PM (EST)[p]Hi 55,
I helped a fiend of mine install a harness on his 50 F-1 Panel truck.. He got it from Sac Vintage.. Only took us a days work and it was up and running.. oh and by the way.. I have yet to install mine yet and have experienced the notorious smoke in the cab when a wire burns up.. everything is hooked direct with no fuses... Not fun.. I feel for ya...

Wiring harness...etc....

I bought an original style (sort of) for my 56 from Mid Fifty. It has an added minimal fuse block (four fuses) and all the properly sized connectors all crimped in place. Modern insulated crimp connectors were used instead of the original type. They state that it may be used for the 53-55 trucks too with "slight modifications". I had fun figuring out how to hook it up with my MSD ignition and GM (I know, I know) one wire alternator. Everything works now though and the working fluid of electricity (aka smoke) hasn't leaked out yet. It cost $165 + S/H and they really do their best to answer all questions. It isn't concours or the top notch show quality 21 circuit setup, but it was the cheapest I could find and it took about a day's work to install. Next I'm cutting in a new dash panel with VDO gauges. More wiring, more fun.

I got my harness for my '50 from EZ Wiring (ezwiring.com). Cost about $200 for a 21 circuit. I am more than impressed considering the low cost. All I have left is hooking up the signals. I'd recommend this kit.

When you change wiring harnesses I suggest that you get one from
from a 56 truck. The wires are smaller diameter and vinyl coated instead of the braided coating on the 55.

Wiring harness...etc....

When installing any wiring weather it is a harness or adding a wire. remember these things.

Do’s

Solder all wire ends it respective connector, Bright is right Dull is slow.
After a solder use heat shrink or liquid shielding to make connection airtight and shielded.
Tape only comes apart in oily and wet environments.
Crimp connections are fast and easy but corrode over time and cost resistance and headaches.
Correct wire size and type. More strands = less resistance.
Use right Shielding for application AKA Heat or high temp, amperage level, Total length, etc…
Measure twice add 6 in than Cut once. Wire stretchers are costly.
Pre rout all wire leaving room for vibration and flexibility.
If adding or replacing Fuse block Use Marine grade blocks (less aggravation in the future) and add room for expansion.
Isolate Block with Rubber gasket material.
Replace all relays, diodes, resisters, etc this will add life to your system.
Lubricate all connection ends with Terminal grease (a dab will do)
Secure and cover all exposed wiring.
Grommet any and all through points as in cab holes fender holes etc…
Tape use only 3m #33 #36 #38 these come in colors as well.
Ground all components properly.

Don’ts
Piggy backing AKA connecting a wire using piggy back connectors, removing shielding in the middle of a wire and connecting a wire.
Working on wiring with battery connected.
Over fusing AKA 6 amp circuit and fusing at 15 amps or jumping fuses.
Under sizing wiring, using household lamp cord or home Builder grade wire.
DO NOT PAINT WIRING this breaks down shielding and flexibility.

These do and don’ts will help you build a very conductive system but it will not happen
In 1 day
I suggest doing 1 location per project.

Thanks for the tips.. The Don'ts are pretty ugly.. Couldn't imagine someone doing those things.. But, I am sure some people have. When it comes to wiring it has to be done right.. Very good tips you have there...
