I have a 1956 F100 project truck and it came with a Dana rear end that I need help identifying. I think it is a Dana 30 and maybe from a Bronco (?)
Ring Gear has stamped: DANA 12 12 58 30933 A3R41 55-19
I therefore know it has a 55 tooth Ring and a 19 tooth Pinion = 2.89 - 1 ratio
Rear inspection cover has 10 bolts, 5 lug 5 1/2" bolt pattern, and 3 1/2" wide brake shoes! Outside Axle Flange to outside Axle Flange = 61 1/4"
Can anyone identify it and what it may have came out of. Thanks.
Does it have a third member? 3.5 wide brakes? not measured by the width of the shoes it doesn't. Ford half tons had 1.75, 2.25 and 2.5inch brakes in 11, 10 and 11 inch diamiter respectivly. Stock gears in EBs had 4.56 not 4.86.

No they didn't. Stock was 3.50 for the V8 and 4.10 for the I6. I'm not sure if you could go to a 4.10 as an option on the V8 from the factory though.
Ferg.- Did you try posting thid in the old F100 section?

Yes, I posted it in the '48 thru whatever forum as my truck is a '56;but to no avail. Guess I'll try posting in the older forum.
Yes, it DOES have 3 1/2" wide brake shoes. I still think it is a Dana 30 due to the Inspection Cover bolt pattern....but what from; who knows!Thank you all for your time.

With that wide a brake shoe...that dif was prolly used on a 4x4 as a front axle. Too big a brake for a Jeep, or Studebaker truck...but possibility from a IHC Carryall, or some sort of Dodge PW. I could find no Ford ref for that application.
Finned drums prevent fading...at least that was the theory before disks were used. The 1962-64 HiPo 406, 427 Galaxies used F/R finned drums...as did the P/C's and wagons.
So you have a Dana w/289-1 rear axle ratio...what we geezers used to call a "high speed" rear end. Wide brake shoes, with a 5.5 bolt pattern.
Some sort of high performance car, I'd say. What did Cobra's use for rear ends?
Whatever that third member came from..it wasn't used on a 4X4 IMO.
Someone here hopefully has a Dana (Spicer) cross ref manual.
btw...some of those HiPo Galaxies have 3 1/2" front brake shoes.

My 68 with I6 came stock with limited slip 4.56 front and rear. Small bearing rear 10X2.5 brakes. D30 front. The ratio was on the axel tag, not a mod.
