12 Volt Generator?

I am having my 6v generator changed into a 12 volt generator. I need a 12v voltage regulator to use with my rebuilt generator. What years did Ford use 12 volt generators? Part Numbers? Were Chevy regulators better? Part Numbers?

I will also need a starter relay? Ford or Chevy? Part Number?

I know it is a slippery path. First a Chevy voltage regulator then a Chevy starter relay and before you know it you are looking at 350 engines and transmissions.

You know I bet you are one of those guys if we hung you with a new rope you would complain. Wash your mouth out with soap and swear allegiance to the Blue Oval. I think you'll find a less hostile group if you stick to the Ford parts!

The regulator should be matched to the genny so the current trip can be properly set.
Have your rebuilder specify what regulator. Standard Brands carries most and NAPA is another good source.

12 Volt Generator?

Ford used 12V generators from 1956-64. I would use the rgulator made for the generator as I have a very limited knowledge of how they work and would not try to re-invent the wheel.

Since the 12V generator is made from the 6V generator I cannot match it up to what came with it (there was not a 12V regulator in 1951). I am not sure what the amps are going to be (about 35 amps?). What voltage regulator would you suggest? How do I adjust it to my rebuilt generator?

LAST EDITED ON 23-Oct-01 AT 08:27 PM (EST)[p]Your rebuilder should have used a armature from a later Ford. He probably changed the field coils too. He should be able to supply the regulator and tell you what year/vehicle to inquire about when you need a regulator or generator parts in the future.
He also can test your gen/reg together on the bench and make sure it is adjusted properly when under a load. Good luck!

I should have been a bit more specific, sorry. The regulator needs to be mated to the current rating of the genny. As Darkman said, the rebuilder should be able to tell you what the new current rating is.
There were several amperage ratings on both 6 and 12V gennies, hopefully you got one of the higher ones.

12 Volt Generator?

I had my Generator converted to 12 volt last year. I bought a 12 volt FORD regulator (1956-1964)and the rebuilder set the generator and regulator for me. You still have to polorize the generator before you start her up the first time. I just used a 12 volt starter relay and 12 volt ignition coil from the same years. I painted the cover on the regulator black and now the only way you can tell it is 12 volt is by looking at the battery. I've even contemplated disguising it as a 6 volt.
The whole system works great and the flatty sure starts great.
