I have installed a 351W and AOD in a 1955 f-100. I just purchased a Lokar floor shifter. The instructions say I must rotate the shifter arm on the transmission from the down position to the up position. I have looked at this arm and can not understand how to remove it to rotate it. Can anyone help me here?
guessing here, but you may have to drop the pan and filter, look up in behind the linkage piece, and see what's holding it in there. I can't say for sure, my AOD came from an 87 XR7, with factory floor shift. My 88 Tbird has column shift, but I haven't looked underneath the car yet. I had to remove the pan and filter to flip the shifter in my C6. Wasn't too hard.
I had the same problem with the 5.0 aod from an 89 f150. I had to drop the pan, loosen the large nut on the inside of the tranny holding the shift arm. Loosen it enough so that you can pull the shaft out just far enough to rotate the shift lever shaft. It has a fork inside that can be easily rotated 180* and tightened back down.
I had problems with the TV cable and had to modify my shift lever a little to clear it and prevent binding. Good luck and have plenty of oil dry on hand because I had a nice mess when I drained the fluid.

to have any pics of your setup?? if so could you please post them Thanks in advance
I shaped and bolted a piece of flat stock to the existing shift lever. A little bend will allow it to clear the TV cable mounting bracket. I am having an old age moment and can get an image to post so here a link to the photo in my gallery.
If the AOD is configured with linkages pointed down, to rotate the manual linkage 180 degrees, you must carefully drop the valvebody, loosen the manual linkage nut, and turn the lever 180 degrees. Then, tighten the nut, making sure the centering pin in the case remains and that both the manual and throttle valve (kickdown) linkages are properly reinstalled inside. Reinstall the valvebody and torque the 8mm bolts to specs.
I was considering using late 80's Thunderbird shifter but have opted for Lokar based on the cabling of T-bird facing wrong direction.
All aod's may not be the same but rotating mine did not require the valve body to be removed, simply to loosen a nut far enough to allow the lever to rotate.
My aod came out of a 89 F150 and even after rotating the lever up 180*, the lokar shifter would not work. The linkage interfered with the tv cable. I had to rotate the lever back down to the original position and bolt on a modified flat bar linkage, pointing up to make it work. If the tv cable was not in the way it would have worked as advertised by Lokar.
Thanks guys, i wasnt to sure what i was doing , im still unsure but am more knowable to this point, I will be using the Ididit Column with the Shifter Arm attached , non floor change.
I picked up my Lokar Midnight nostlagia shifter today; when installed I have two issues:
the shifter arm is inboard on the mounting bracket and hits on the mounting bracket
the shifter arm is almost directly above the arm on the transmission and is 6-7" inches above it, meaning I will have to modify the shifter arm, one by moving it outboard and two possibly lengthing it to drop it in line with the transmission arm.
Anyone else experience this, my transmission does not seem to be the same as some installs I have seen posted.
Here's a link I found that might help...the linkage to the shift arm has swivel eye bolts on each end and does not have to line up directly with the shift lever. http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/...ifter_install/
I was able to install the Lokar shifter today, needed to get email help from Lokar as the instructions were a bit vague. They made no mention that the linkage was 1 1/4" offline from the shifter; but I bent an offset in the rod linkage. I also had to re-position the shift lever on the shaft to accomodate my placement in the tranny. It seems to work fine, may need to adjust the neutral switch and modify the kickdown cable yet.I'd post pics but have not resolved my Java issue with gallery yet.
OK. I got a TV cable kit from Lokar and it mounts pointing down with the mounting bracket attached to the transmission pan. Therefore I had to reverse the transmission shift lever 180 degrees to the up position. As was explained in a to me before, I had to drop the transmission pan, loosen the large nut holding the shift lever in place, rotate the lever, tighten the nut and replace the transmission pan. Overall, this was not too difficult to do. With the TV cable lever in the down position there will be no interference with the shift linkage. The rest of the shift linkage install was straightforward. Because the shifter arm and the transmission arm are offset from each other, I had to bend an offset in the threaded rod shift linkage. I want to thank all those who replied to my original post as they were all helpful to me.
