Hi y'all, I recently picked up a 1951 F-1. How do I figure what rear-end I have? Not the ratio, but size. 8", 9", etc. No tag on the housing. Some changes have been made to the truck so I assume it is not stock. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Erik in St. Louis

There are 10 lugs on the rear of my housing, and a check hole that is on the same plane as the axle.
If this will help anyone with the ID.
As far as the ratio--I tried the trick with raising the tires off the ground, turning the tires and noting the revolutions of the drive shaft. I came up with 2:1. Can this be right? Truck doesn't have a tach yet.
Thanks again-

Looking through my parts book (48-54), the only rear end (of 11 shown) that sounds like yours is a '53-'54 single speed from a model TH or WH. I think that would be an F-6. There should be a 1" drain hole on the bottom and a 2 1/2" peep hole level with the drive line on the passenger side. 10 studs in the main case point forward and the main case extends toward the wheels with square tubes. Published ratios were 7.2, 6.8 or 6.2 to 1 although I think its easy to swap these out to change ratios.
From the web site, I would guess 8", but that is a guess.
Did you spin both wheels? Won't you get half the ratio if you only spin one? You might try pushing the truck and counting turns.

and a peep hole on the cover(rear), also aprox. 1" dia.
However the 10 studs are on the REAR, going through the cover and threaded into the case itself. (no nuts)
The case extends toward the wheels with ROUND tubes. When checking the ratio I had both wheels off of the ground.
It may be stock, I just don't know.
Still scratching my head.
Thanks for the information, though.
Have you mesured Flange to Flange and size of access
aslo what size is the bolt pattern on the Axele lugg bosts
as well as the center on the axele?
It sounds so far that you may have a 32 spline 9".
but im not shure.
Did you look for a tag on the rear cover? Chances are it's gone, but you never know. By your description, it's not a 8" or 9" rear. They have the meatball or center section coming out the front with studs and nuts.

Any one know what was stock for a '51 F-1 ??
