My 02 V10 X has 130,000 faithfull miles with no problems, But here lately it has been stalling about 60% of the time when shifted into reverse. The engine is well overdue for a tuneup, it still has the original plugs and I have yet to clean the IAC valve, but it other than this problem it has been running like the day it was new. My question is has anyone else had this problem, and is it related to the transmission/ torque converter or the engine?
But if i had to guess:
It would seem to be a computer glitch somewhere or a problem with the trans... The engine shouldn't care whether the truck is in reverse or not, because it does the same thing (ie increase rpm's) so unless the trans is messed up and bogging the engine down when it shifts into reverse, I would prolly guess its a comp glitch that is telling the engine to do stall. But thats just a guess.
Today My X did this exact thing twice. It's never done it before. (Mine is a 02 psd). Within the last 2 weeks, the weather changed dramatically. The temp dropped from 40f to 0f! Lots of snow, cold temps..... maybe a cause???
Check your trans fluid. Low fluid can cause the torque converter clutch to drift on and that will stall the engine. It will happen first in reverse because reverse has a higher pressure demand.
Pull the pan and check the filter. A ford tech had replied to one of my post about this problem saying he's seen this happen several times saying the filter falls down into the pan. I pulled my pan and sure enough my filter had fallen down out of the transmission. It's a poor design the filter is only held up by the oring on the filter neck no bolt like a chevrolet.
