ZF5 would be a good option, if you can find one. A rebuilt ZF5 tranny starts at about $3500 Canadian. I got a ZF5 in my 93 and it is a great tranny.
Of course you will once again need a donor truck for all the jewellry such as clutch, flywheel, linkage, pedal, cylinders, etc.... to make it affordable.
If you buy parts you are looking upwards of $5,000 in parts alone before you even start to get your hands dirty.
Used ZF5 are hard to come by as they are either in one of two categories: 1, running in a truck somewhere with lots of miles on it; or 2, They have been abused and the aluminium housing has been stretched so they are basically junk and not re-buildable.
I looked converting my 91' with the E4OD to a ZF5 last year and the only way I could have done it reasonably would have been with a donor truck that already had a ZF5 in it so I could salvage parts.
The other problem I have is that my wife thinks having two trucks is too much so I would have lots of trouble explaining a third truck in the driveway, even if it is a junker.
lol ya man, thats a good idea...3500$ for a tranny eh...why the hell are they so expensive? Are they like extremely rare or what? So where the hell should a guy like me should start looking besides a junk yard/scrap yard? Do you think it would be wise to just get rid of this truck and buy a newer model with the ZF5 in it?
Nah, I think I just might invest in a ZF5 tranny. I seen some on ebay for like 1000-1400$ by reputable tranny rebuilders. Their feedback was pretty good, so I'm thinking I migh tas well do it.
check and see if they want a core back, most builders do or they charge more$ and don't forget to price all the stuff you need underdash and outside to opperate the clutch. will the trans. come with the shifter also?
there are a lot of "little" expence items if you don't have a doner vehicle.
With the treatment my truck gets, the T 19 that is in it now, bullet proof.
If I were installing a ZF 5, it would be the S47 model, it is rated for more torque.
Other than the extra hastle getting a speedometer to work and having to swap transfer cases as well, I would actually install a ZF 6 because it is even heavier and rated for even more torque.
I can get both for the same price here.
