I'm trying to tow a trailer with my V6 3.0L Escape. The trailer is around 3200lbs. When I'm traveling 100km/hr the RPM's sit around 4250. I'm wondering weather this is a safe RPM for this vehicle?
When I'm pulling my utility trailer loaded total weight about 3500lbs I'm around 3500-4100rpms depending if I'm with or going into the wind. I have a boxy trailer lots of drag.
But pulling my buddies empty equipment trailer around its only around 3000 rpms at 65mph. The trailer empty comes in around 3400lbs. But very little drag. Should be fine just keep an eye on youe temp gauge. Change oil when it gets dirty and change tranny fluid at recommended time frame.
I know ford says these will tow 3500lbs, but to honest I wouldn't try it. I towed my 21' pontoon once with it, on the highway and won't try anything close to it again. Engine never got warm, and of course they don't have a trans temp gauge so I don't know where that was, but with it turning that many RPMs and that big of a drag I don't think the tranny would last.
You didn't say what year your Escape is. I also think 3500 lbs is a lot for these vehicles to tow. I tow a 2400 lb boat and it does fine, mostly in overdrive with downshifts to 4th on the hills and rarely into 3rd. It certainly does much better than my 2002 V6 did. How many miles are you towing and is it a regular occurrance?
