Hey guys,
Well finally got my EGT gauge in and when for a ride to see what my temps were.
I'm running a 70hp tow tune. Idle 350-400EGT, cruise 80-90km/hr 5-600EGT. When I step into it to pass or get just for grins hit max speed 180km/hr. Im hitting 1200 right away then climbs to 13-1400EGT. Once in top gear it starts to drop back down to 8-900EGT. This is all empty truck no weight & not pulling.
Should I get my tunes redone? Something amiss or is this normal to hit such high # then they drop down?? I thought max should of been 1100.
Oh this is with pyro installed in driver exhaust manifold like everyone has mentioned for earlier instructions.
I havent gone back to stock yet to check the difference either, but will do that this week.
It has been recomended to me that 1250* is the max sustained temp you want to run. I do also see 1400* for a second or two when I really punch it. Nothing to worrie about for a second or two.... Just dont let it stay there for much longer
Thanks for the info. That is news I needed to hear. I've been running tunes for a year without gauges & when I do finally put them I thought they were too high.
Plus I dont romp on it like that normally. I was doing it to see the gauge moving.
sounds a little high to me for a tow tune. usually they are built to keep the EGT's low. i wouldn't get alarmed about those temps all us tuned tuckers see them but just imagine what the temps are like with a heavy trailer..
Interesting... Culvert, you stated you're running stock exhaust with those numbers and jasontrucks76 (with a 4" TB) is running the same numbers. I would have thought that the bigger exhaust would help reduce EGT's? Jasontrucks76...are you running your cat and a muffler, (is your muffler a full flow type deal or is there baffle restriction)?? ...I'm hoping for better numbers with a larger exhaust.

Good question! I considered the same thing while i posted. I would assume my temps drop faster then the with the stock exhaust tho. I have a full turbo back MBRP 4" exhaust with no cat and the MBRP muffler. The muffler is nothing more than a straight through with some sound attenuation.
I am running a 120 hp tune from Innovative and only see the elevated temps when I really romp on it I think the OP is running a 70 HP tune so that will have some effect also.
My main point was that the temps he is seeing are OK and will not have adverse effects if kept in check.
I do wish I could have done a "before & After" test when I installed the larger exhaust but I did most of the updates all at one time. Then installed the gauges a couple months after. I would be real interested to see the results if anyone had been able to do a before and after.
I would guess the biggest thing you are going to see is the temps DROP allot faster and probably a 100 - 200+ drop in temps while running down the road.
i think a lot EGT temp drop benefits come more when the truck is working hard an pulling. that's where you will see the biggest improvements. regular driving even with a tune you will still see a drop but not as big. same with aftermarket intercoolers IMO.
Thanks for the extra input. I believe the tunes were done for a 4" exhaust but that isnt in the budget yet. So I'm running with stock exhaust, No Cat.
The temps climb high but then do drop off quick once truck hits top gear. I'll try my other tunes later this week but for now we have -10temps & 2-3cm of snow on the ground not going to try anything too crazy.
