I think my powersteering pump is about to bite the bucket. It makes a horrible whinning noise when turning, and the brakes are crap. That being said - I'm going to go ahead and put a new one on.
First off - where is the best place to buy one and about how much $ should it cost?
Secondly, is this hard to install? I have moderate mechanic skills - should I try it myself or have the stealership do it? Is there any links on doing this yourself?
I wouldn't let the dealership do a job like that. It's a relatively easy job and if you are not up to it any decent mechanic could handle it and charge you a whole lot less than the dealer - IMO.
my 02 F-350's P/S pump started to fail, heard the same whining noises and I had a real hard time turning the steering wheel at times. Te truck still had some warranty left and the P/S pump was diagnosed bad and replaced under warranty.
truck had 100K miles
mine just got replaced by me. it was getting HARD to steer .. brakes were still okay.
Now mine was a lot easier because I was doing the water pump at the same time so the fan and shroud were taken out.
but you will need a gear/pulley puller to pull the old pulley off and press it back on your new pump. But after that .. 3 bolts on the front that hold it in it's housing. You have 2 return lines - one top and one bottom that release with pliers - clamp bracket.
your high pressure is one line on the side facing the tire.
Also, remember when you pull that bottom line off, have a bucket ready it will drain.
If you don't have the pulley puller you can get one at most autoparts stores. You leave a deposite and get your money back when you return it. Free tool usage.
I can't think of the name right now but you can Goggle these guys. I have a very weak pumo and $250.00 they have a super pump they say will turn under any condition, mud, large tires. I don't remember the price of the other route which is a Saginaw pump with remote mount resevoure and custom bracket to direct bolt to a PSD truck.
I changed my P/S pump yesterday. Autozone had the pump for $42.00 and has a life time warranty. Pulley removal and installation tool is a must, can't do it without it. Took me 3 hours and I flushed and filled with synthetic ATF.

Symptom was noise like a bearing going bad, steering hard to turn and spongy brake pedal. Now with a new pump, all is good, quiet pump and I have brakes and steering at the same time.
FWIW, Most of my hard steering issues went away with the purchase of a new set of tires. I replaced those damn load range C's that came on it with some load range E's. Higher pressure = less resistance = easier steering.
