My wife called at lunch and said the Expedition died. She was pulling out of the driveway and it just quit. I came home and tried to start it - no go. It turns over fine, but just won't start. Any ideas on where to start looking??
It could be one of many, I would check them all.
Theres a couple of fuse boxes in the engine compartment besides the one under the drivers side dash. They're by the firewall on the drivers side.
If you have no engine light my first instinct in your situation is FUEL PUMP. turn off all the noises, then turn the key to ON(don't try to start) with a window down or door open. Do you hear a quiet 'whine' coming from the left rear underneath of the vehicle? If you don't notice it at first jump underneath the gas filler and stare and the gas tank and listen closely, and have the wifey turn the key to ON (don't start) All fuel pumps sound different but you should definitely hear at least something. If not, start siphoning :P
I checked all the fuses and they were good. I even changed some of the fuses out with new ones. I did notice that when I turn the key, the theft light flashes and the odometer reads ----------? I'll listen for the fuel pump etc this afternoon.
Where would I find the PCM relay? Is there a way to test it?
It should be shown in your owners manual but it is in the power distribution box under the hood. Its the one right next to the pcm power diode and ac clutch diode. Quickest way to test is to swap it out with another one like it in the box. There is one like it for fuel pump, which of course you cant use and drive, but you cant at least see if the odometer comes back alive and the pats light goes out. You can also just try tapping it to see if that will energize it temporarily.

Hi Shoeman,
Curious if it is the PCM relay - did you replace it and did it work? As you described, it turns, all other fuses seem okay, security light flashes, and odometer displays dashes. I just put my spare relays (1 full and 1 half relay) in the vehicle just in case.
On a side note, my XP is working fine right now. Based on tips on this thread, I turned on the key without startng the truck and tried to listen to fuel pump but couldn't hear anything - I was hoping this could help me diagnose future issue with the fuel pump or relay.
I changed around all relays etc and replaced a couple of fuses. Now the theft light is NOT flashing and the odometer reads the correct mileage. But it still won't start. I had the wife turn the key while I listened to the fuel pump. When she turns the key I hear a clicking (I was listening under the rig, near the fuel tank). Does that mean the pump is working?
I only have one key - so I don't know if that's the cause. I live in a small town without a Ford dealership. I want to check everything before I have it towed to the dealer.
Well if you swapped around relays one was for the fuel pump and one for the PCM. So you moved the bad PCM relay to the fuel pump position, and now the cluster and theft light work, but as I said this now makes the fuel pump inop. So go get a full sized relay and replace the fuel pump relay now that the PCM relay was replaced by the fuel pump relay you originally had. Then you should be good to go.
