Starting in 1961...California required a smog valve, in 1966 a smog pump..and related garbage...the absolute worst happened in 1969..evap.emissions controls..which changed the gas tank neck, added a charcoal cannister..among other things..try finding a locking gas cap for a 69 or 70 Econoline sold in CA...it was tough 20 years ago.
CA also required evap emissions to be added to post 1950's cars and trucks...some of you fellow FTE members in CA may recall the crappola that went into the upper radiator hose...with related vacuum lines going everywhere.
Finding a "friendly" smog certifier was the norm then...as once the vehicle was inspected and passed...the unsightly junk was removed by all the die hard car buffs.

Yup, emmisions in the early days was a bunch of bolt on junk that did absoluely nothing except kill the fuel mileage and performance of the engine. They seem to have it figured out a little better these days. Now if the government wasn't run by big business, maybe they would go after the real polluters and leave the automotive world alone......
i used a egr plate as a spacer under my holley 500 .hooked up the vacuum to the egr motor runs smoother.my 71 cs gets 13mpg at 65.
rather have 2 old fords than 1 new one.except for my 96 standard cab splash
