FYI, I voted Banks - just 'cause that's what's on the truck I just bought. Also IIRC the early factory units were Banks, so to me, that says something.....
ATS developed the factory system for 1994 MY. Although it had a smaller crushed downpipe... I would stay FAR away from the ATS. Mine leaks oil all over and the company isn't doing much to help. Very much a waste of money, and the 3" exhaust they have has a really crappy muffler.... but what can you expect....Clint Cannon is too cheap service wise. A great product does not make up for terrible customer service... In this case, both unfortunately in my case are terrible... Sidewinder I have heard good things about....
ATS developed the factory turbo for Ford.
Ford choose to use the crappy 2.25" downpipe that they then ran over with a couple fork lifts before they installed it.
If you want my ATS, you are going to have to catch my truck if you can.
go to your local pump & turbo rebuilder, see which one has a better repair rate/reliability/power ratio; better yet have them custom build one for your engine or need
Out of all the ones I put on, only two ever came back with complications. Neither was the turbo's fault. One had the pressure chamber bolt back off because I didn't locktite it and the other one needed the pump turned up more.
which one?
I'd go for whatever one I could find that was most complete and cheapest.
Of course I think buying a new one is kinda wasteful... I'd find a junkyard truck and pull off the system. I regularly buy turbo systems for $300-$500
I mostly find banks nonwastegated units. I have an ATS 088 on my truck :-)
As far as ford ruining a perfectly good downpipe, I'm sure if banks had supplied the turbo, ford still woulda found a way to have messed it up.
I will say this.... with the older units especially, ATS is ALOT easier to install/remove.
