TSB help

Is there a "free" source for full text TSBs. I'm trying to determine contents of two TSBs for my daughter's 2002 Explorer. Both deal with cracking of the liftgate glass applique (the plastic panel that spans the lift gate just under the glass).

TSB # 15892, subj: rear liftgate cracks
TSB # 0485, subj: service procedures for liftgate glass applique damaged/cracked.

Thanks for any assistance anyone might be able to provide.

Here are a couple of sites that might help:

http://www.alldata.com/recalls/ &

http://www.odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/

Tsb

Steve... Neither of those sites provide full text TSBs free. You can get summaries, i.e., subject and identification code. AllData is $24.95 for 12-month "membership". NHTSA charges $38 for a single page search/output. They may not be available for free on the internet; may have to get the dealer to print them for me. Thanks for responding.

John -

I think MazdaRangerGuyInSTL is (or was) a Ford tech; try shooting him an e-mail.

"Just did one..." do you mean you replaced a cracked panel/applique. Can you share some of your experience with me. I was told by a body shop friend to use a heat gun to loosen adhesive, and remove in pieces. I'm assuming the channel will be a pain to get clean. Is it difficult to get the new panel in? Do you put the new adhesive in the channel before you start. If you could give me some "heads-up", I would certainly appreciate it.

Full text TSBs are available on this very site:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/fulltext/index.php

Click on the link, or scroll up to the top of your screen, and click on the "Recalls/TSBs" tab, then click on "Full Text TSBs".

Type in 2002 Explorer, then hit "Search"

Steve... I did that and all that shows up are 5 TSBs that are repeated many times. Neither of the 5 had anything to do with the cracked tailgate applique. I've used the link at the top to get the summary descriptions for the 2002 Explorer, and there are 2 dealing with the problem. Thanks for responding. John

Yes, I did replace the panel. Not an easy job, the applique is urathaned to the rear window. Yes, I did say window. remember, the applique is part of the bottom of the glass. So be careful when removing it. You have to cut the urathane and break the panel in pieces to get it off. There is a black reinforcement behind the applique, look closely don't cut it! then you need to clean everything off and use a special bonding adhesive from ford (which you won't have the tool to apply it) or use urathane adhesive. Just apply it back over the old that you cut and press in place use tape to hold it and let it dry.

Thanks, Ranger; your info and the cost of the "stuff" I'll need to do the job have convinced me to have the body shop do it. Found out today that no one makes a matching color in a spray can, and a private party can't buy auto paint, thinner/reducer, etc. unless you have a workorder from an approved body shop. The 3M urethane adhevisive and a quart of cleaner is $32. Since I'm having to get the panel painted at the body shop, doing the rest of the job myself only saves me about $35--that's below my threshold for doing it. At least I got the local dealer to sell the panel for wholesale--$42. Thanks to all who have participated in this discussion.
