Been having an intermittent problem with the 4x4 control trac on my 96 Explorer 4 door with 4.0 engine w/ auto trans. I have the dash selector **** with settings for 2wd, auto, and 4wd. When driving I should be able to switch from 2wd to auto. 90 % of the time it does not engage and the dash light does not come on. If I do the same while stopped, it may engage and the light will come on 50% of the time. When stopped and in neutral, I can shift to 4wd and it usually will light the dash light and engage properly. Any ideas on locating the problem. The check engine light has not come on, and their are no codes stored. Thanks for any sugesstions...Don

I had somewhat of the same problem, mine would just make a clicking sound and would not engage. They replaced the shift motor and it still didn't work so then they replaced the "control modual" and that did the trick. My truck is a 2002 sport trac dont know if they changed it much over they years or not.
this behaviour usually indicates that you need to re/re the shift motor on the T/C.
when you are finished with the rebuild (easy job), you may have to reset the computer by removing the cable from the battery.
