My 2.9L engines (had two) made it to 140K plus, so I think it is a good engine and not weak. I don't know how much farther because I sold the vehicles.
If you can get a running BII 4x4 (any year) for $200 with a decent body I say go for it! You can buy a rebuilt 2.9L with a long warranty from Advance Auto.
