hello,
i have a 1957 Ford F600 that needs a new set of king pins. can i buy these at napa or will i have to order them form a restoration parts place? if you have to buy them from a restoration place what place would that be?
You'll have to go to Napa or perhaps Ford to get them. The aftermarket places for the most part won't have the stuff you need for the Big Trucks. Make sure you take the old pin in with you so you can maybe avoid 5 trips back and forth trying to get the right one. You can try the Ford Truck store but my experience is that you won't have a lot of luck with them for something that old. I've been trying to find axle gaskets for my 60 one ton with no luck what so ever from Ford.
thanks i will try napa. but one more last minute question, how do you get the king pins out. i know that the have a clip on the top but do they have a bolt or a key in the bottom to hold them in? i really don't feel like breaking anything.
I've never worked on a truck that big, but look for a nut in the axle near the king pin. It will be on the side of the axle boss. This may hold a wedge pin. Take the nut off, and drive the pin out. The king pin would have a notch in it, where the pin wedges itself in to hold the king pin in the axle.
thanks i will do that. do you need any particular tools such as pullers or a reamer. what cost do you think they will have on a set of those king pins.
