I have a 78 ford truck f150 2wd. The king pins are bad. I can only find one place that will change them for $320. My question is: is there any other trucks with the ball joint sit up that I can put in my truck and do away with the king pins? If you could do that would it be worth fooling with or should I just get the king pins fixed? Is the ball jionts a better set up than the king pins? If anyone could help I would really appreciate it. You guys have the best site anywheres!!!
Thanks alot
Mark
I can't give you a direct answer but I changed a 71 Bronco from a king pin front axle to a ball joint one. The ball joint axle was much more stable at speed. Still haven't figured out why. I don't know when the trucks went to ball joints.
the late 80's trucks have ball joints, but i dont' think the i-beams will swap in our trucks.. there's nothing wrong with the king pins, as long as you grease them often(atleast every 3000 miles) our 77 has the orginals in it, and my 79 has over 150,000 km's on the king pins i put in it... it would probably cost more then 230$ for all new ball joints too....
I just did the kingpins on my brother-in-law's '81 F-100 last weekend. He says it drives like a new truck now. He got a quote from a tire store for more than $500 but I knew that they didn't know what they were doing 'cuz they were charging him for 2 kingpin kits. Either that or they were just plain ripping him off 'cuz one kit does both sides. It's nice to work in a machine shop with access to a pin hone. Makes for a nicer fit than reaming though reaming will work if that is all that's available. IMHO Whatever you do, DON'T go with the plastic bushings. They don't hold up.
Just my $.02
