I am buying a 5.4L out of a '98 truck. Engine ,trans, and all other related parts. Would it be a SOHC ? I am not sure when they first came out with the DOHC's. Also is it as hard to change a 2v to a 3v as a V-10. I know most of the parts interchange between 4.6 and 5.4. I would assume it is like a 351 and 302. Also with the trans this is the last year 4 the E4od's right? I know I have alot of questions and most of them have probrably been answered 10 times but I trust what you guys have to say. And anytime i can pick the brain of someone knowledgeable I can't help myself. Thanks
It's a SOHC. The DOHC came in some Navigators. Yes, it would be a major pain, especially with a 98 non PI engine.
Not sure on the tranny, I'm sure someone will, though.
I am pretty sure all Navi's came with the DOHC 4V 5.4L, if an didn't it was very early builds. Anyway, I am confused on the V10 part they were 2V just like the other mod motors until they switched to the 3rd gen 3V's. As far as I know '98 was the last year for the E4OD and it is more or less identical to the 4R100. Since the 3V's have only been out a few years they haven't been dealt with much and I can only think of 1 or 2 2V's that I have seen converted and it was a major PITA. It would be far easier, and probably cheaper, to get PI heads/intake and charge the engine. Even switching to 4V would be easier I would think.
Well from what I have heard and read about the V-10's the either the water jacket ports or oil ports or something to that degree do match up and you would have to get the block modified. What does "PI" mean ? Also would this block be ample for a performance build ? I want to put it into an 1/2 ton or mustang ... whichever I come across first. Thanks
Are we talking about the 5.4L V-8 or the 6.8L V-10? Nothing head or intake wise is compatible since the V10 has 2 more cylinders. Ford went to Power or Performance Improved heads/intake in mid '99 in trucks they just flow air better mainly because of a better intake. It would be even easier to put a 4.6L in a Stang since it is a bit shorter (and they came stock '94+), the modular V-8's are larger in dimension than a 460, I've seen V-10's shoehorned into Crown Vic's but it is a major build. The '97 and '98 5.4L's are the weakest of the lot at 235hp.
I just used the V-10 for comparison. Sorry if I confused anyone. I have read up my 6.8 alot more than the 5.4's . What little I know about the v-10 is more than the 5.4. What I meant about the "performance build" is how strong is the block conpared to the newer ones? The more I hear and read about these engines the more confusing they begin to get. Different plants making different heads , cranks, and blocks for the same engine? All of which or none of which will interchange. Thanks again
Oh ok, there are romeo and windsor blocks. The 6.8L is just a 5.4L with 2 extra cylinders so the general rules of thumb would apply. The only real difference in the '97-'98 blocks would be their higher compression if you go with PI heads/intake. It has been a while since I did the romeo V windsor stuff on a 5.4L but IIRC the romeo's are almost non existent almost all are windsors so there shouldn't be much of a problem with parts. there will be a sticker on the drivers side valve cover that says either romeo or windsor. Here is a great site on the 4.6L and has a touch of 5.4L info up to '01 when they went to PI's in the cars:
