I just bought my wife a remote starter for Christmas. So now I need to get a key made and programmed to install the system. I poked around Ebay a little, and noticed a few sellers had keys for "2000-2003" or "2002-2004", etc. Did not see any 2005 keys. Did Ford change anything between 04 and 05, or is this just an oversight on the sellers part?
I can't tell you if it changed from earlier years, but I asked at the dealer for my 2005 when thinking of having a spare key made, and was told that it is a specific key blank, and they would have to have ALL keys (2 existing + the new one) at the dealership at the same time to program or the old one would no longer work. I know the owners manual tells the steps, and it's pretty long and detailed. I never had it done after learning of the expense, figured I would worry about it when/if I lose one.
Just curious, why do you need a new key to install the remote starter? Or do you just want one? I've been thinking about a remote start, not alarm just the remote start if I did it.
If you have two programmed keys, it's easy to program a third yourself. If you lose a key and only have one programmed key, it takes a dealer to reprogram the system to accept the new key. Get a spare key before you need it and save yourself $$$$$$$$.
Yes, those remote start systems have a module that goes up inside the dash that the key stays in. That way it will start beings the chip is required to allow it to start. Just had to go through this a month ago when I had remote start put on my X. I only had one key, had to get another, get it programmed and then I could finally take it in to get the start installed, without it they can't do it.

My dealer did not bother to explain that part, as I'm sure they wanted the labor for the "programming." So, what does a non programmed, cut key cost at dealer, or is there cheaper alternatives??
