Yes I got a custom tune SCT chip. They had advertised 19 HP and 21 ft-lb gains. Tuner got 2 HP and 4 ft-lb gain over the stock tune. I even have a cold air intake, larger MAF, headers and a flow master cat back exhaust. I complained to high heaven to SCT, got a full refund and now they do not advertise performance gains on thier web site. So take it for what it is worth.
Anybody have first hand experience with using Hypertech or other chip for 4.0 OHV/AT? Is it worth it?
i have gotten great results with sct and their products. but then we tune and dyno at sea level so we are usally closer to their findings. on a v6 4.0 i don't know how much any one would get. but will say it's best to go into sctfash dot com and type in your zip code to find a shop near your home to work with. who knows what will work there best.
a 74 f150! man what did you expect to get? the ad did state "POSSIBLE OF UP TO" hp. gains. they all depend on to many viriables to say you will get this or that. and most of us who do custom tune normally are working with new or very young motors in cars or trucks.
may i ask what shape was your motor and drive train were in to start with ? are you at sea level as sct is in FL?. and what was your air temp and humidity? were they at the best testing levels?
i have done tunes on one truck and over 5 different days on the same dyno, gotten 5 different readings of as much as 30 hp different.
please don't knock a good companie because you had problems others didn't have. known of us are perfect , we just try hard to please.

I am knocking a company that falsely advertised its products' results. There was no "potnetial" listed in ther ad. It was a fixed 21 HP and 19 ft-lb gain on a stock 4.0 Ranger/Explorer footprint. 1991 to 1994 model years.
My truck has a few miles on it, about 165K when I did this little "experiment".
I keep it immaculately maintained. It had a fresh full tune-up on it at the time, new granatelli MAF sensor, new Borla headers and flowmaster cat back exhaust, clean K&N aifliter/cold air intake...all the stuff that should help a custom tune to more potential.
It runs perfectly even now with 180K on it...better than new with the mods I have.
I realize your posotion...in the industry...dealing with "customers" all the time. But I am a degreed engineer and I have worked on cars since I was 15...26 years now. I have built 350 HP race motors and 13 second 1/4 street cars. Nothing for the records but pretty darn scary cars on the street for sure.
Oh yeah, the numbers were all correct for sea level. I used AZ dynochip, a local here in Phoenix. Reputable? Well he was one of the first test beds for SCT as they were forming the company...pretty much SCT's #1 distributor. Keith knows his stuff. And he said to me - 21 HP, you are kidding right? We only see 10 to 15 on a stock 4.6L Mustang with these chips.
No. SCT lied. I called them on it and I got a full refund. Now their web site lists no performance gains. I wonder why? I did download a copy of their web site before they changed it. If you really want to see their previous lies, I can show you.
Anyone know of a company that does custom chips for 4.0L applications with different cams, etc?
Yeah that's what we've been talking about here. SCT has a real nice product for custom tuning. My issue was I didn't need a custom tune and was falsely mislead by SCT advertisment.
Some guys think, well it's just a bigger cam and so I'll just use bigger injectors. But a precision tune doesn't work that way. Fuel flow is not a constant between closed/open/closed. It ramps up and ramps down. So you need to be able to change the duration of the open for the proper A/F ratio's.
A bigger cam will require a custom tune to be right. It may run, sure, but pass emmissions and max HP, no.
