trans temp gauge

Im going to be installing a transmission cooler and temperature gauge in my 01 f250.

what do i need to install the guage besides the actual guage and pod?
what wiring or components will i need, and where is the best place to mesure the temp from?

also, does this look like a good gauge?

it has a backlight, which i like, and one of those colors almost exactly matches the gauges in my truck.

Autometer makes a manifold that installs into the hard lines. You can use almost any T to add the sensor to the trans lines or you can drill the pan. You will need a little more wire than comes with the guage, 4-6 colors and I usually have a spool of each so I don't have to splice more than I have too. Splice parts are up to you, I like to soldier and heat shrink, but you can use buttsplices as well.

You will have all kinds of opinions of pre cooler or post cooler. It will make a difference, but not in the tempature the trans is at, so I would go into the pre-cooler line.

I would use a quality guage such as an autometer or stewart warner. Some one who has a name in racing. Not a new comer who markets to the fast and furious kind of person.

autometer it is.
thanks ReAX.

so i just splice the electric sender to the line running out from the trans, then run the wires up to the guage?

i usually use male and female bullet connectors when i need to splice two lines, just in case i need to disconnect it for any reason, I assume its all right to do the same here?

edit: wait, what exactly connects to the t?
is there some sort of electrical unit that sends a signal to the gauge via wires?
what do i need to get besides just the gauge, t, and wire?
or does the guage usually come with what i need?

Yep, tie into the trans output fluid line with a manifold or T. Install the sender and run the wire upto the gauge.

Bullets are ok, I would use a good pigtail my self. It's a half dozen of one and six of the other, so use which ever you like.

There is a plug on the left side of the transmission, above the pan, that the sender fits directly in. Remove plug, install sensor, using no tape, if it is a one wire sender. It grounds through the case.

With the 5857 guage from autometer, it comes with an 1/8npt sender, so you don't need the other sender. That sender is most likely a two wire, but I haven't looked at in quite a while.
http://www.autometer.com/cat_accesso...st.aspx?pid=40 This is the manifold I suggest if you want to tie into the cooler lines.

Yes. If you buy the Autometer gauge, it will come with a wire and a sender too.

if i put the sender on that hole on the side of the tranny will it give me different readings as far as temperature?

which is closer to actual, that side spot or the trans cooler lines?

Yes, it will.

It depends what you want to see.

The port on the side of the trans will give you the average temperature of the trans. Many people use this temperature. Ford specifies the maximum temps for the trans based on pan temperature, which is almost identical to this temperature.

If you put the sender in the line to the cooler you will see a higher temperature. Many people say it's the highest temp in the trans, but that isn't quite true. The temperatures right at the clutch faces are MUCH higher than the fluid going to the cooler.

If you put the sender in the cooler line be prepared to see high temperature spikes every time the torque converter unlocks under load. You can go well above 200°F VERY quickly. Is that a problem? I don't think so, but I think I'm probably in the minority on that point.

Wink I agree . . .

The most common & best place is in the tranny pan mount hole. As mentioned in this thread it takes the pan temp and that is what you really need to monitor . . . This is a pic of an autometer tranny temp sending unit installed there.

what trans is that in the pic?.. is that the torq shift or the 4r100?..I was interested in doing the same on my 06 but was not sure where to mount the sender. Could i possibly use where the stock sensor mounts?..

That's a torque shift....I have an 05 PSD and that's where I mounted mine too.
