im just confused.
some people were saying that mounting the sender in the tranny side hole will make the guage read hot...but some say it reads 140-150 from that same spot....theres a discrepancy in the answers
I called both auto meter and banks(buying the banks trans meter)and they both said install in the test port.I am going to guess they should know pretty much what they are talking about.
I just installed an external tranny filter and put the temp gauge on the cooler line leaving the tranny. Driving this way for 2 weeks and with the torque converter locked I see about 125-130, with it unlocked I see 150-155.
I also have my digatal temp gauge installed in the test port. My trans pulling a grade with a 30 TT in tow went to 150! Driving around town this time of year I see about 115! The thing is I put a Techosha 24000 lb cooler in line with the OEM cooler. After reading about high trans temps and busted trannys I fig the cooler the better. About a month ago I towed my buddys new 36 ft 5th wheeler and we pulled some grades I never saw 170 ! But right now it is cool here but in a few days I will be leaving for FL with my 28ft 5th wheel we just bought. Gonna be a little warmer down there so we shall see how she does. BTW the gauge company said that was the place to install the sender!
Does anyone have a photo or location(for temp sending unit) for 4R100 . Mine is in a 2000 Winnebago. I just bought a Ford Temperature gauge, liquid filled. It is not electric- it uses a capillary tube- hope it works okay. What are good temperatures to see and what not good to see???

Look on the driver's side of the trans, towards the front of the trans, just above the pan. There is a black, 10 mm, hex-head pipe plug. Remove this plug and install the sender. The thread is 1/8" NPT dryseal. As long as the engine is not running you shouldn't lose more than an ounce of ATF with the plug out.
I pulled my 16' car trailer with my trail rig on it, and i never got above 125 in the test port, so I am thinking of moving mine to the pan, my engine temp gauge was reading around 180. I figured that the tranny temp would be similar to the coolant temp, at least that is how it is on my fathers 04 6.0 PSD
