I have a 97 F-250 lariat with the 5.4. Rancho lift and 35's. It has the **** for the 4x4 instead of manual(which i prefer) anyway, me and some buddies went to a local creek bed and at the present time my truck is the beast of the newly forming group. To make a long story short i drove through the creek bed that was about 1.5 feet deep, i started to back up to avoid a huge rock and began spinning at the rear....went forward because i was able to clear the rock now....spun that way as well...no problem 4x4....well turned it and nothing and before i knew it 1/4 of my tailgate was in water and the rear wheels were nearly buried if not completely buried....finally the 4x4 engaged and i crawled right out...the **** went bad once so i replaced it and now this....WTF...how embarrassing it was
Do you have manual lockouts or vacuum activated automatic lockouts? I don't recall off hand what your year had without the shop manual. Check to see if the motor is switching at the transfer case also.
vacuum lockouts....i never once heard it engage underneath....when i did hear it...it was engaged. only happened that one time but i dont wanna be stuck somewhere and it happen again
Well check the front diff. and make sure the vacuum operated fork assembly is working(suck vacuum on both sides of the actuator to be sure it's engaging and disengaging). then check for power at the 4x4 motor on the xcase. It could also be the 4x4 vacuum solenoid under the hood. I've never replaced a solenoid but heard of them going bad.
