Yet another 4x4 issue thread...
So, I am having trouble finding a solution to my exact issue. It is a 2000 F-150 4x4 5.4 with dash **** 4x4 switch. When the **** is turned to 4x4 I get an immediate click. Then a second or two later I get a series of clicks for about 5 seconds or so. There is no dash light and the 4x4 is not engaged. It will only do this once . I can turn the **** back of and on and then nothing happens until I restart the vehicle. After restarting it will do the process again.
When the **** is engaged the front drive shaft can be turned by hand so the transfer case is not engaging.
So basically, is it the motor or something controlling the motor that has gone bad?

Could be either or but most likely the motor, there kinda like a window motor and the gear reduction usually go you can unbolt it from the transfer case and have someone operate it, have a pair of pliers with you so you can put a little torque on the motor if you hear that stripping noise you know the motor went.
