I have a 98 150 supercab long bed. The previous owner did some modifications so he could 5th wheel with it.
I had suspected something for a while, and the other day I noticed and confirmed it, I appear to have a 5 speed automatic. I can reproduce this easily, it shifts 4 times, drops about 500 RPM each shift. If I'm not trying to get each gear, it will usually skip one. I was under the impression that these shipped with a 4 speed auto or that crappy mazda 5 speed stick.
5.4 engine, ford stamped transmission pan, 20 bolts, 4x4. What exactly, or likely, is pushing my truck?
Well its either the 4R70W that came behind all 4.6's in 99 and newer or the E40D that came behing all 5.4's in 99... i assume 98 was no exception and it has the E40D... the only reason that i might be skeptical is that ford is really funny bought this kinda stuff...it is the first year for the 5.4.... and maybe it didnt get the good tranny right away...but im sure that those are your two options....more people will post that know more...both trannys are fairly strong.... and will take alot of beatings....i know from experiance...
Your 98 has either an E4OD or a 4R100 based on the pan bolt count. Check your TRANS code on your door label.
Both are 4 speed automatics including OD. Your "fifth gear" is just the torque converter locking up which will usually cause a final drop of 200-300 RPMs when cruising at highway speed.
Ah, thank you. Before I bought this truck I had under a year's experience on automatics, and all of those were pre 90. My last truck had a T18, I wanted another stick, but couldn't find one.
Ya the stick that comes with these trucks are pretty weak i think ... its a M405 or somthing close to that... i belive its made by mazda... could be wrong...
