I was decoding the vin in my 69 bronco. The P/O had installed a 351W out of what I was told a 1970 Torino. Changing the rear main seal the other day I saw the block code and thought for fun id see what it said.
D9AE-6015-ED
I read the "read this first" thread and It was not listed. I went to a few other sites and got this:
D=70
9= 1979 (everyone knows these two)
A= Galaxie
E= Engine
I have never Heard of a 1979 Galaxie. I thought the last year was 72' I tried to find a picture of one and couldnt. Anyone able to explain this, or know about this code?? Thanks
the 9 was definately a 9. I have been searching for about 2 hrs now and there is a lot of mystery behind this casting number. No one seems to know what they come out of or what exact year....What a pain
Code "A" in the casting number means it was originally designed for the Full Size Ford. "A" means full size Ford in company part numbers. A lot of aftermarket books
still say Galaxie though. It is a generic code for all full size Fords. Also, that "A" does not mean it was not installed in other applications. Most likely it is out of a 79 T-Bird
(although most used the 351M), or the redesigned 1979 Ford LTD and Mercury Marquis.
It was an option in those because of it's lighter weight than the 351M. And the redesigned LTD's were all about weight reduction in order to meet CAFE limits.
By the way, the Galaxie 500 was offered thru 1974, then dropped. The lower level Custom 500 was offered to retail customers thru 1975, then sold only to fleet buyers in 1976-1978. I've seen a 1977 used by the local telephone company.
I didnt know that, pretty interesting, I was doing a google search and one picture came up (among others that didnt match at all) for a 1978 galaxie there were a lot of LTD's that popped up. One pic came up of an early 70's firebird labeled "1979 galaxie" haha

I ended up bringing the old rubber seals to the parts store and made sure they were exact. They just must have had wrong seals in the wrong box. I guess it stands true new parts are not always good parts! Everything sealed up very nice! thanks for the input guys
Thanks for the vote of confidence baddad457. My truck knowledge is a little shaky. But I know my Ford cars! I own twelve, all but one from the 1970-1979 time period.
Well, except for the lone Chevy. (it was given to me by Grandma, so who am I to
complain!!).
