What factory options were there for exterior mirrors on '66 F100? Most of the gallery photos show the small circular chrome ones that attach in the rectangular holes in the doors. Were "western" style mirrors (which bolted to top of doorframe and middle of door) also factory (or dealer) options?

The Western mirrors were available as a option or dealer ad on. Most of the f250 trucks had the Western style mirrors . My 66 f100 owners manual shows the Western mirrors could be bought as a kit as well.
They also came in white or stainless steel. There was actually 3 styles of Western, jr mirrors. One had just attachment points at the top and bottomf the mirror, the next stuck out farther with the same attachment points plus the third point towards the front of the door by the vent window. THe 73-79 trucks used the identical mirror. The third was mostly used on the large series F-600 and up, but could be bought as an option on the F-100-350's. I personally like the 2nd ones I described. You can find these at most junkyards that have trucks. They look the best of the 3 and have excellent visability.
Thanks.
I found a set of the stainless steel ones in a junkyard on a ~'68. My truck's got holes at the top of the door (above the window) and around midpoint of the door...so probably at some point in history it had the Western jr style. I figured these would look better than the newer-style ones that are on the truck at the moment:
Splains the rectangular slots cut in my doors that I found just under a thin layer of bondo.I will be following this thread as I will be doing some bodywork over the winter and would like some nice origional looking mirrors. The JR west coast may be the way to go cause I will be using the truck to tow my boat!

I think those rectangular slots are for the small single-stalk chrome mirrors. The mirror mount slides down into that slot...and is bolted from the inside (my guess -- as my truck doesn't have such mirrors). Check out the gallery...most of the slicks have those style mirrors. If not used, there were black rubber plugs for those holes. Or in some cases, bondo.
If your interested I found these chrome 5 1/2 X 8 1/2 rectangular mirrors that should mount in the stock chrome door mounts. You just need to make s 1/2"stud and tap a thread in it for the mirror. The mirror is the # 310 which is a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch, ball stud mount, with a regular flat glass.
The price of the #310 is $7.07 each
